The objective of this course is to teach the operators, lab personnel and consultants how to optimize the wastewater treatment plant processes using the microscope and knowledge of wastewater microbiology. This unit includes how to develop a wastewater microbiology laboratory program, and includes tools, techniques, and standard operating procedures used to perform wastewater microbiological analyses for treatment process control.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Identify the different types of microorganisms; such as protozoa, metazoa, and bacteria

• Understand the importance of good sampling technique for microbiological analysis

• classify groups of microorganisms and their characteristics within the treatment plant

• demonstrate proper laboratory QA/QC procedures and documentation for monitoring and documenting microorganisms present in wastewater
